Hikvision vs. Dahua: Comparison of IP Camera DS-2CD2142FWD-IWS and IPC-HDBW4431E-AS

Source of the article: https://cctvcamera.com.sg/hikvision-dahua-comparison-ip-camera-2cd2142fwd-hdbw4431e/

Any DIY enthusiast will happily tell you that Hikvision and Dahua CCTV and IP cameras are the absolute best choice for the task. Both of these security camera brands are extremely popular in Singapore, with Hikvision probably being a more sought-after choice as of now. There is no particular reason for that phenomenon, although generally speaking, Hikvision is the slightly cheaper choice out of the two options.

In any case, Hikvision is the world-leading IP camera manufacturer as of right now, and at the time of writing this (2017), it has a 17% market share. Dahua is the second one with a respectable market share of 5.5%. (Data source: IHS)

For demonstration purposes, we will be comparing the latest 4MP IP cameras, Hikvision DS-2CD2142FWD-IWS and Dahua IPC-HDBW4431E-AS, because this resolution will likely become the golden standard for home CCTV cameras in the near future.

1. ONVIF and RTSP support for Hikvision and Dahua IP Cameras

Dahua-DH-IPC-HDBW4431E-AS

Dahua-DH-IPC-HDBW4431E-AS IP Camera

ONVIF and RTSP are probably among some features you should look for in an IP camera, especially if you have existing NVR. Hikvision as well as Dahua security IP cameras both support them just fine.

ONVIF is there to make sure the camera is compatible with equipment from third-party manufacturers, while RTSP allows software and other equipment to access your camera’s video stream. One example is the ever-popular VLC player.

2. The sensor used in the IP Cameras

Both Hikvision and Dahua IP cameras have a 1/3” Progressive Scan CMOS sensor, the most common one you can find in these type of IP cameras.

When buying a security camera, the size of the sensor is quite important. It directly influences the low light ability of a camera, and this holds true for camcorders as well. Basically, larger sensors are better suited to operate in low light conditions.

Here is how it works: by trying to cram more and more pixels into a sensor that has the same size, additional noise is created, which – in turn – reduces the details in the video. As you can see, a larger sensor effectively reduces the problem.

In any case, both Hikvision, as well as Dahua 4MP models, have true 120dB Wide Dynamic Range (WDR). This serves to further improve the video quality.

3. Minimum illumination

Minimum illumination measures the minimum amount of light required for a CCTV camera to produce a viewable image. In this category, both IP cameras are the same: both are capable of 0.01 lux and 0 lux with IR on.

4. Lenses used in Hikvision DS-2CD2142FWD-IWS and Dahua IPC-HDBW4431E-AS

cctv_camera_ip_camera_home

Hikvision DS-2CD2142FWD IP Camera

Both Hikvision and Dahua security cameras allow multiple fixed lenses with different focal lengths. Hikvision has 2.8mm, 4mm and 6mm, 8mm and 12mm lenses, while Dahua uses 2.8mm, 3.6mm, and 6mm. Hikvision offers a consumer a bit more options.

5. Max bitrate of the IP Cameras

(Read here to know what is bitrate) Another difference between Hikvision vs Dahua security cameras is that Hikvision’s model has a max bitrate of 16Mbps, while the Dahua’s model has a max bitrate of 10 Mbps. However, that is a bit far from being a reason for concern. Both bitrates of up to 10 Mbps are usually more than enough for what you’re going to need.

6. Weight and dimensions

In terms of weight, both cameras are nearly identical: they are both around 0.5 kg. As for the dimension, Hikvision is 4.4” × 3.2”, while Dahua is 4.33”×3.19”. Again, these differences are minimal and noticeable only if you put one camera next to another to compare them. In practical scenarios, the difference is probably not going to matter.

7. Price of the IP Cameras

Generally, Hikvision security IP cameras tend to be slightly cheaper for some reason. However, there are different ranges of IP cameras with different features coming with totally different price ranges.

Therefore, we recommend that you make your decision based on the features each of these models provide,  not price alone.

8. Resolution of the IP Cameras

Both Hikvision DS-2CD2142FWD-IWS and Dahua IPC-HDBW4431E-AS IP cameras have the resolution of 2688 x 1520 as the maximum.

9. Simultaneous video streams

Here is another difference between the brands: in this category, Dahua outperforms Hikvision, since Dahua allows for 3 simultaneous video streams at different resolutions, while Hikvision only allows for 2 streams.

Note: this is only relevant if you’re trying to do multiple simultaneous streams at different resolutions. If the resolutions are going to be of the same quality, this will not affect you in any way.

10. Frame rates

Typically, you can expect the frame rate to jump anywhere between 20 and 30 fps. Dahua’s technical sheet promises for it to never fall below 25 fps, while Hikvision runs at 20fps with the resolution of 2688×1520, 25fps with the resolutions of 1920×1080 and 1280×720. In all of the other modes, however, the minimal fps you can expect to see is 25.

11. Motion detection

Motion detection is one of the most desirable features for a reason: it helps conserve storage space, as well as saves time when reviewing the recorded footage (since you probably only want to go over the parts when something moves unexpectedly). Long story short: both models support motion detection feature.

Conclusion of comparison of Hikvision DS-2CD2142FWD-IWS and Dahua IPC-HDBW4431E-AS

While there are subtle differences between Hikvision and Dahua security IP cameras, comparing them really comes down to personal preferences. You can’t go wrong with either one of them.

Hikvision and Dahua: How to Choose? Which is Better?

In this ever-growing world of video surveillance, there are no other brands more famous and reputable than Dahua and Hikvision. If you, as a customer, have just started researching about the numerous surveillance options available in the market, you are bound to end up shortlisting both the aforementioned brands. And that is when you might just behold a dead end before you. It really is difficult to pick one of the two.

Generally speaking, both Dahua and Hikvision are very popular in the market. If you were to ask over the online forums, 50% of the people would recommend Hikvision over Dahua, while the remaining 50% would recommend Dahua over Hikvision. However, popularity alone cannot be the deciding factor. The other aspects of the two brands more or less cancel each other out.

While Dahua and Hikvision are ruling the roost, nobody has yet been able to point out the brand that takes the top spot. So, without further ado, let us begin our quest to expose the undisputed king of surveillance CCTV cameras.

The Differences between Dahua and Hikvision

Global Market Share: It is no surprise that Hikvision rules the global market shares with a 17% forecast in 2017 (reference from IHS). Dahua comes second with a forecast of 5.5%, which is considerably lesser than the former.

The Similarities between Dahua and Hikvision

CCTV Camera Singapore

Now that we have taken a look at the differences between the two top brands, let us comprehend the similarities.

ONVIF and RTSP: The Open Network Video Interface Forum (ONVIF) is an international forum that is responsible for creating a globally recognized standard for the interface of IP-based products. Both Hikvision and Dahua support this protocol. They are also compliant with the Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) that grants access to all the non-ONVIF streaming software and hardware.

The Sensors: Both the brands install similar sensors in their products. For instance, both the DS-2CD2042WD-I and the IPC-HFW4421S have the popular 1/3” Progressive Scan CMOS sensor. Since this type of sensor is ideal for 3MP cameras and the two products above have a 4MP output, they are equipped with a 120dB WDR to enhance the quality of the output.

The Minimum Illumination: You would be surprised to know that both Hikvision and Dahua offer the same minimum illumination for their products in a particular class. Let us take the example of the DS-2CD2042WD-I and the IPC-HFW4421S again. Both these cameras can make a minimum illumination of precisely 0.01 lux and 0 lux with infrared switched on. Thus, you can expect optimum video quality in low light from both the products.

The Number of Simultaneous Streams: Most other brands of cameras are furnished with the regular dual-stream technology. Hikvision and Dahua, on the other hand, boast of the triple-stream technology! This means that their cameras can transmit three different resolutions of video streams simultaneously. However, only a select few of their products have the privilege of triple-stream; the others are equipped with dual-stream.

The Lens Variety: Both surveillance brands offer fixed lenses at varying focal lengths. Here, Dahua one-ups Hikvision by offering a better selection of lengths with each of their cameras. For instance, the Dahua IPC-HFW4431E-AS has three focal lengths at your disposal – 2.8mm, 3.6mm, and 6mm. Its Hikvision counterpart of the same class, the Hikvision IP Camera DS-2CD2143G0-IS offers similar focal lengths. (Further Reading: Hikvision vs. Dahua: Comparison of IP Camera DS-2CD2142FWD-IWS and IPC-HDBW4431E-AS)

The Maximum Bitrate: Both Hikvision and Dahua render similar max bitrate in most of their products.

The Prices: The CCTV CamerasIP cameras, DVR, NVR, etc offered by Hikvision and Dahua are very close in price. As close competitors, Hikvision and Dahua have large variations of the products. Both brands offer really competitive prices compared with other established brands nonetheless.

Concluding Thoughts on Hikvision and Dahua

With so many similarities in the mix and the differences barely discernible between the two brands, it is a tough task to pick the winner.Hikvision, as the market leader, the higher streaming speed coupled with the best hardware money can buy renders top-notch video surveillance at an affordable price. As the inventor of HDCVI technology, Dahua is keeping a fast pace to chase the market leader. You can never go wrong with either Hikvision or Dahua.

Dahua vs. Hikvision: How to Make a Good Choice?

IP cameras appeared as an innovation in the security business, offering excellent features to clients who need high-resolution footage for lower prices.

Although initially these type of CCTV cameras were of low-range, with fixed lenses and very limited options, companies like Dahua and Hikvision launched CCTV camera models with the features of high-range products, such as remote focus, powerful zooming and high-quality audio, all of it for prices that were below the usual range.

Hikvision appeared in the surveillance market in 2001 and its success soon followed, becoming the leader of security technologies.

On the other hand, Dahua Technology, also founded in 2001, holds the second largest market share.

Both companies have dedicated their work to satisfy the requirements of those clients who look for quality solutions for the lowest price possible, that is, the most cost-effective options of the market.

Today, Dahua and Hikvision are practically must-be choices when it comes to a list of surveillance equipment providers. By offering similar products, these two companies frequently are hard to differentiate, so that is necessary to talk about the small but existing differences between them in order to help consumers make an informed purchase decision.

Dahua vs Hikvision Singapore

Understanding the main features of IP cameras

If you need to make a decision regarding which camera should you purchase, it is essential that you have a general idea of what do their features mean.

Therefore, before comparing both brands, we think it is important to explain at least the main characteristics of an IP camera.

1. The Range of Vision/Lens

This is a measure of the angle that can be covered by the IP camera. There are varifocal lenses that have a range of vision that can be lowered or increased. On the other hand, there are fixed lenses that can only offer an invariable angle.

Usually, a 2.8 mm lens opens 90-105°, making the range of vision go from wall to wall and a good quality image up to a linear distance of about 5-8 meters (focal length). The higher the number in millimeters, the narrower the angle of coverage is, but the longer the distance is covered.

Both brands of Hikvision and Dahua offer a variety of fixed and vari-focal lenses with their respective focal lengths, ranging from 2.8mm to even a few hundreds millimeters.

2. IP Camera Zoom

First of all, there are two types of zooms: digital zoom and optical zoom.

Security IP cameras with a resolution of 1080p (and higher) include a digital zoom. This feature is more efficient as the resolution goes higher, because with lower resolution cameras, the image gets pixilated when trying to zoom in for details.

The motorized vari-focal zoom function is highly useful. It allows users to adjust the coverage distance and the angle of coverage after installation. This Dahua 4MP IP Camera package includes the motorized vari-focal function.

3. Size of the Sensor in the IP Cameras

This feature has a big influence on the capability of the camera to record quality images even in low-light conditions. Generally speaking, the larger sensor in the IP camera will have a better performance in dark scenes.

With a small sensor, pixels get crammed resulting in a lot of noise and consequently, a poorly detailed image. On the other hand, larger sensor size will allow more pixels to be part of the image, reducing the noise and offering more sharpness.

Both brands of Dahua and Hikvision support a good level of minimum illumination but Dahua has an advantage in some models thanks to the superior sensors they use, which allows a better night view with Starvis® and Darkfighter® technology.

4. Bit Rate of the IP Cameras

The bit rate of a security camera describes the number of bits moving from one point to another in a network per second. Bitrate is measured in kilobits per second (Kbps) or megabits per second (Mbps).

For IP cameras, this number of bits include video and audio. For higher capacity cameras, bitrate is often measured in Mbps.

The maximum bitrate in Hikvision IP Camera can go to 12Mbps. Dahua’s maximum bitrate usually reaches 10 Mbps, although it is said that a bit rate of 10 Mbps is quite good for the usual needs.

5. Motion/Face detection

This is a desirable feature in surveillance systems. Motion detection is possible thanks to the comparison of consecutive images that the camera “understands” as the occurrence of movement in the scene under surveillance.

When IP cameras include the motion/face detection feature, there is a significant saving of storage space. Time is also saved since it makes the review of recorded images faster since it is possible to go directly to the scenes where movement occurs.

Facial detection in IP cameras is mostly used by companies, offices, buildings, houses and organizations that need to record the physical details of the people moving about. The inclusion of this feature in IP cameras can be quite helpful nowadays.

All the models from Hikvision and Dahua offer motion detection functions; while quite a large number of models from Hikvision and Dahua offer the function of face detection.

6. Simultaneous video streams

Both Dahua and Hikvision IP cameras come with the feature of "multiple video stream" which allows the output of more than one video streams at the same time. Different settings can be defined for each output regarding resolution, bitrate and other aspects.

The possibility of sending different and independent streams is a great advantage. Most of the Hikvision IP Cameras have dual streams (one main and one sub); while most Dahua IP Cameras have triple video streams (one main and two subs).

7. Missing Object Detection, Audio Detection, Scene Change Detections, etc

These are the smart functions included in most of the IP cameras of Hikvision and Dahua. They can be particularly helpful when there are such specific needs, such as you need to monitor a specific object like an expensive item in a store. If the camera detects the object is missing from the scene, it starts to record immediately and sends an alert to the system manager.

The possibility of detecting noises with your IP camera can be useful when you need the most detail about the area under surveillance. In some situations, it can be helpful to detect car alarms, objects being hit or broken, people screaming, etc. Those IP Cameras include audio detection that immediately sends an alert via email or smartphone to the security manager so that an action is taken. The camera should also be directed towards the place where the noise comes from.

Both Dahua and Hikvision have certain models that include these features.

8. Maximum Resolution

Camera resolution indicates how detailed the image will be. The higher the resolution, the better, and of course, the cost will be higher. Resolution is given by the measure of the images recorded by the camera. This measure is made in pixels (width x height) and it is also referenced as the multiplication of both numbers followed by the letters “MP”. Most of the IP camera models for both companies range between 1MP and 4K (8MP) but there are some models with even higher resolutions.

Which brand should you buy, Hikvision or Dahua?

This is a very particular decision. Since most of Dahua and Hikvision products are similar, the key is to define your specific needs and make a review of the functions each model offer in that regard.

As for the price, both brands offer very similar prices in most of their product variety, which is very competitive when compared to the rest of brands in the market. The good news is, whatever your choice is, you can be sure of purchasing high-tech equipment from one of the two leading brands of surveillance systems in the world.

Hikvision DS-2CD2143G0-IS vs Dahua IPC-HDBW1431E: IP Cameras Comparison

When it comes to video surveillance IP Camera, one simply can not stop comparing the top two brands – Hikvision and Dahua. The fun lies in analyzing the pros and cons of two different IP Camera products of the two brands in the same class. That way, you can get a clear glimpse into the minor differences that lie between the leading horses in the surveillance race. So let us don our thinking cap and compare Hikvision’s and Dahua’s newest offerings – the Hikvision IP Camera DS-2CD2143G0-IS and the Dahua IP Camera IPC-HDBW1431E respectively.

The IP Cameras, in General

Let’s try to decipher what both these IP Cameras have to offer when it comes to the main component of surveillance – the camera itself.

The image sensors of both the Hikvision IP Camera DS-2CD2143G0-IS and the Dahua IP Camera IPC-HDBW1431E are the same i.e. 1/3” 4 MP progressive CMOS, which means that you get top-notch sensors with both the products. The shutter speed range is also the same (1/3s to 1/100000s), thus allowing each camera to capture higher quality images in low light with slow shutter speed. The Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) again is the same (120 dB), rendering perfect light balance to the image.

The only visible difference between the two IP cameras lies in the intensity of minimum illumination. With the Hikvision DS-2CD2143G0-IS, you get slightly better low light benefits, given that it offers 0.01 Lux @ (F1.2, AGC ON), 0.018 Lux @ (F1.6, AGC ON), and 0 Lux with IR. The Dahua IPC-HDBW1431E isn’t far behind with its 0.08Lux/F2.0 ( Color,1/3s,30IRE), 0.3Lux/F2.0( Color,1/30s,30IRE), and 0 Lux/F2.0 with IR on.

The Lens of the IP Cameras

The major difference between the two lenses lies in the variety of focal lengths offered. Apart from the regular 2.8mm lens, the Hikvision IP Camera DS-2CD2143G0-IS offers 3 additional focal lengths – 4mm, 6mm, and 8mm; whereas theDahua IP Camera IPC-HDBW1431E only has one additional lens of 3.6mm. Thus, the Hikvision DS-2CD2143G0-IS grants better portability options if in case you decide to change the position of the camera.

The Alarm Trigger Range

Both the IP cameras trigger the alarm for motion detection, video tampering, network disconnection, IP address conflict, illegal login, and storage anomalies. The one advantage that the Dahua IP Camera IPC-HDBW1431E has over the Hikvision IP Camera DS-2CD2143G0-IS is that the Dahua IPC-HDBW1431E alarm triggers even during a change of scene. How futuristic is that!

Video Compression of the IP Cameras

The main compression specs of the two devices are the same viz. H.265/H.264H/MJPEG with smart codec support. However, the Hikvision DS-2CD2143G0-IS trumps the Dahua IPC-HDBW1431E to a greater degree with the former’s three-stream encoding. The Dahua IPC-HDBW1431E, on the other hand, offers the regular dual-stream. Thus, the Hikvision DS-2CD2143G0-IS can transmit 3 different resolutions of streams simultaneously. It also offers a slightly higher bit rate with its 16 Mbps maximum than Dahua’s 10 Mbps maximum. Thus, though you can experience lag-free streaming in both the products, the quality of the video in the Hikvision IP Camera DS-2CD2143G0-IS will be a wee bit better than the Dahua IP Camera IPC-HDBW1431E.

Audio Compression of the IP Cameras

Surprisingly, the Dahua IP Camera IPC-HDBW1431E doesn’t feature an audio chip, especially given the number of AV surveillance cameras that are in demand. The audio facility in the Hikvision IP Camera DS-2CD2143G0-IS has a sampling rate from 16 kHz to 48 kHz. It also supports the environment noise filtering component. Kindly note that this audio compression feature is available in model Hikvision DS-2CD2143G0-IS, not in Hikvision DS-2CD2143G0-I. When you order this model, do pay attention to the ending “S” in the model number.

Network Protocols

The network protocols of both the IP Cameras are more or less similar. Both offer ONVIF and ISAPI compatibility, with the Dahua IP Camera IPC-HDBW1431E being compatible with smartphones as well. The Hikvision IP Camera DS-2CD2143G0-IS makes up for it by featuring a wide array of security options like one-key reset, Anti-Flicker, heartbeat, mirror, password protection, privacy mask, Watermark, and IP address filtering.

Miscellaneous Features

The other miscellaneous features of the two IP cameras include operating conditions tagged to withstand any kind of weather, be it hot (up to 60 degree Celsius) or cold (up to -30 degree Celsius), or even a highly humid one (up to 95%). You can even attach them on the outside wall without bothering to cover them with plastic. In addition, both Hikvision IP Camera DS-2CD2143G0-IS and  Dahua IP Camera IPC-HDBW1431E offer a vandal resistance feature at the level of IK10.

So, which one to choose? Hikvision DS-2CD2143G0-IS or Dahua IPC-HDBW1431E?

With a bird’s eye view, the Hikvision IP Camera DS-2CD2143G0-IS and the Dahua IP Camera IPC-HDBW1431E are quite similar. But when you zoom in on the specifics, you will find a few good differences between the two. Thus, if you are willing to sacrifice audio and a better video quality for a robust construction and an additional trigger, then go for the Dahua IPC-HDBW1431E. If best-in-the-class transmission quality and focal length variety matters, then the Hikvision DS-2CD2143G0-IS is the surveillance cam for you. However, it’s not like the Hikvision DS-2CD2143G0-IS transmits low-quality videos and the Dahua IPC-HDBW1431E breaks with a touch! Don’t sweat and pick the one that suits your requirements best.

Error code 17 for HikVision CCTV Camera / IP Camera - what is it and how to resolve it?

If you suddenly see a "Error Code 17" when you try to watch the live view of your HikVision CCTV Camera / IP Camera system, this article is to explain what it is and how to resolve it

What is Error Code 17 for HikVision CCTV Camera / IP Camera?

Error code 17 happened when you are trying to connect the HikVision CCTV Camera / IP Camera / DVR / NVR using mobile app iVMS-4500, or computer software iVMS-4200. Most of the time, it happens suddenly. Configuration remains unchanged. You suddenly receive this error code 17.

Based on HikVision's official SDK explanation, Error Code 17 means:

NET_DVR_PARAMETER_ERROR: Parameter error. Input or output parameter in the SDK API is NULL.

Martian Language, isn't it? Here are the explanation and solution to it. Read on...

First of all, don't panic. In general, this "Error Code 17" only means the internet connection with your CCTV system is having an issue. The client, which is your mobile phone, or computer, couldn't communicate with the server, which is the IP Camera, or DVR, or NVR, due to the parameter error in the configuration. The recording is still working fine. You won't lose any important video records because of this error code.

So what has caused the error?

In a little detail, "Error Code 17" often means the IP address of your CCTV devices (IP Camera, DVR, NVR) can't be resolved correctly, for whatever possible reasons. We have provided a premium DDNS service which is used to capture your home router's real-time IP address. If there is any issue (e.g router issue, ISP's service failure, etc) disrupting the communication between the DDNS resolving and the IP refreshing from your router,  you will see this error code 17.

To solve this problem, you need to instruct your CCTV system to resend your current IP address. Usually what you need to do is to restart your CCTV Camera DVR / NVR / IP Camera (shutdown / turn the power off, and turn it back on). The CCTV system will refresh your IP address, which should usually resolve the issue.

If you have restarted your CCTV DVR / NVR / IP Camera a few times, but still seeing "error code 17", please follow the instructions here to get our remote support.
